Vague Images at the Beginning and End of the Day

A hug/punch eulogy for all things impossible now. Vague Images is a sketch book of images and sounds from the year wrapped around a trip out to Loomis, South Dakota to find the abandoned farm where my grandfather grew up. At the same time the film is a travelogue of my frustrations and understandings of gay sexuality. The two are connected.

26 Pulse Wrought Vol 1: Windows for Recursive Triangulation

Explores travel to and from, east to west, during a Winter Solstice Pacific Ocean sunset.

The Invisible Ax – He knew that the woods are full of forest demons who graze deer and hares like cattle, that the Chuhaistyr – who rends wood nymphs from limb to limb – romas about, inviting passers-by to join him in dance, and that the sound of the ax lives in the forest. He also knew about the Rusalky who emerge from the rivers on clear days to sing songs, to invent tales and prayers, and about the drowned men who dry their pale bodies on river boulders after sunset.

Open Air – At the only open-air cremation site in the United States, with a torch at an altar on a side of a mountain, surrounded by ninety people, a family lights the fire that consumes their loved one’s body, sending billows of smoke into the blue sky of dawn.

filament studies – An examination of imperfect translation, of the digital/physical gap, and of falling somewhat short of aspirations. An ode to tech-nostalgia and experimental processes of all sorts. A love song to the changing nature of the hand-made. 16mm film was modeled and 3D printed in various colors and at various thicknesses. That 16mm film was then run through an optical printer and photographed for animation.

Human Body Battleground Organ Organism – An appropriated moving image collage investigating the penis and vagina as disembodied vessels. By utilizing a digital voice to enact this estrangement, a narration of declaration generates a questioning of definitions, where sound and image structures dismantle and reveal a deconstruction of audio-visual form and subject’s signification.

Corn Mother – A single cartridge of Super 8 captures my mothers last visit to her garden. Her body is seen slowly dissolving towards illumination, while her image is forever immortalized in light and silver. Poem borrowed from the Wabanaki creation myth of the first woman, The Corn and Tobacco Mother.

Histories of Simulated Intimacy – “Great obstacles excite great passions; since eros consists not in possession but in wanting, what could stimulate eros more than distance and especially death, itself the ultimate distance?” -John Durham Peters, Speaking into the Air

The event is sponsored by the University of Denver’s Community Writing Centers and presented by Sarah Boyer.

Malinda Detweiler: My name is Malinda Detweiler. I was born October 31, 1974 at midnight in Trenton Missouri and grew up inside an Amish community in Jamesport Missouri, until I was twenty years old. At the age of twenty I left the Amish, having lost interest in their religion. Since that time, I have had one daughter. She is nineteen and ready for college. I have four older brothers and five sisters. We went to a small one room school two miles from our house. There was an old dirt road that led to the school. For many years, my older brothers and sisters taught school. I was greatly influenced by them. My older sisters taught me how to draw when I was a young child, and I’ve been drawing ever since. Today, I have become serious with my writing and illustrating.

Elizabeth Vonaarons: Elizabeth grew up in a small town in Wisconsin.  Inspired by adventure stories, such as Jules Verne’s “20 Thousand leagues Under the Sea,” she began writing at an early age. She first started writing poetry when she moved into the Robert Browning Building on historic Poets Row. Several of her poems, such as “How do I Know I live on Capitol Hill”, have been published. Elizabeth has written a children’s story, several screenplays, and short plays and is presently working on a full length play, “No More Money for You”, and two screenplays, “Flanagan’s Mansion”, a horror story, and “The Chauffer”, a romantic comedy.  She presently is enrolled in online classes in the graduate program for Motion Pictures and Television with the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Fran Ford: Fran Ford has been writing poetry since the age of 19. Fran has lived in Denver for 30 years

Sarah Boyer holds a PhD in poetry from the University of Denver and her first book of poems, Howard, appeared last year. She lives in Denver with her partner Phil and her dog Oyster. She has worked at The Gathering Place as a writing consultant for the past 4 years.

Using Electricity Series

Using Electricity is a series of computer generated books, generally meant to be worth reading, in some cases page by page and word for word, in other cases by inviting repeated browsing and sampling over time. The series title takes a line from the computer generated poem “A House of Dust,” developed by Alison Knowles with James Tenney in 1967. This work, a FORTRAN computer program and a significant early generator of poetic text, combines different lines to produce descriptions of houses. “Using electricity” is one of the generated lines.

Featured Book: Walled States, Waning Soverignty, by Wendy Brown (Zone, 2014)

Our featured book for May is Wendy Brown’s 2014 Walled States, Waning Sovereignty (published by Zone Books). Stop by and pick up a copy!

Why do walls marking national boundaries proliferate amid widespread proclamations of global connectedness and despite anticipation of a world without borders? Why are barricades built of concrete, steel, and barbed wire when threats to the nation today are so often miniaturized, vaporous, clandestine, dispersed, or networked?

In Walled States, Waning Sovereignty, Wendy Brown considers the recent spate of wall building in contrast to the erosion of nation-state sovereignty. Drawing on classical and contemporary political theories of state sovereignty in order to understand how state power and national identity persist amid its decline, Brown considers both the need of the state for legitimacy and the popular desires that incite the contemporary building of walls. The new walls—dividing Texas from Mexico, Israel from Palestine, South Africa from Zimbabwe—consecrate the broken boundaries they would seem to contest and signify the ungovernability of a range of forces unleashed by globalization. Yet these same walls often amount to little more than theatrical props, frequently breached, and blur the distinction between law and lawlessness that they are intended to represent. But if today’s walls fail to resolve the conflicts between globalization and national identity, they nonetheless project a stark image of sovereign power. Walls, Brown argues, address human desires for containment and protection in a world increasingly without these provisions. Walls respond to the wish for horizons even as horizons are vanquished.

Wendy Brown is Class of 1936 First Chair of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where she is also affiliated with the Department of Rhetoric and the Critical Theory Program and the author of Undoing the Demos: Neoliberalism’s Stealth Revolution (Zone Books).

“Brown’s thesis, summarily put, is that modern-day walls are discredited markers of failing sovereignty. What is sovereignty? It is the revealed will of a political association to dispose of its own affairs. As that definition implies, it contains an irreducible element of the de facto. For Brown, sovereignty is now a ragged oriflamme, a willful but doomed exercise in self-persuasion.”—Glen NeweyLondon Review of Books

The Truelist is a book-length poem generated by a one-page, stand-alone computer program. Based around compound words, some more conventional, some quite unusual, the poem invites the reader to imagine moving through a strange landscape that seems to arise from the English language itself. The unusual compounds are open to being understood differently by each reader, given that person’s cultural and individual background.

The core text that Nick Montfort wrote is the generating computer program. It defines the sets of words that combine, the way some lines are extended with additional language, the stanza form, and the order of these words and the lines in which they appear. The program is included on the last page. Anyone who wishes is free to study it, modify it to see what happens, and make use of it in their own work.

Part of the series Using Electricity.

Nick Montfort is an author or editor of fifteen books, which include books of poetry along with six from the MIT Press, several collaborations, and several artist’s books. Five of his previous books are of computer-generated poetry and include #! (Counterpath, 2014), 2×6 (a multi-lingual collaboration, Les Figues, 2016), and Autopia (Troll Thread, 2016). Counterpath’s featured book for June is Christina Sharp’s In the Wake: On Being and Blackness, published by Duke University Press in 2016.

In this original and trenchant work, Sharpe interrogates literary, visual, cinematic, and quotidian representations of Black life that comprise what she calls the “orthography of the wake.” Activating multiple registers of “wake”—the path behind a ship, keeping watch with the dead, coming to consciousness—Sharpe illustrates how Black lives are swept up and animated by the afterlives of slavery, and she delineates what survives despite such insistent violence and negation. Initiating and describing a theory and method of reading the metaphors and materiality of “the wake,” “the ship,” “the hold,” and “the weather,” Sharpe shows how the sign of the slave ship marks and haunts contemporary Black life in the diaspora and how the specter of the hold produces conditions of containment, regulation, and punishment, but also something in excess of them. In the weather, Sharpe situates anti-Blackness and white supremacy as the total climate that produces premature Black death as normative. Formulating the wake and “wake work” as sites of artistic production, resistance, consciousness, and possibility for living in diaspora, In the Wake offers a way forward.
